“Together we can make a difference”

One Sunday June afternoon in the year 1999, a retired Reserve Bank Officer had a day dream, passion, secretly nurtured for a lifetime – unusual, but yet practical. The result, a magnificent lower bloomed to be named as “SOCARE IND”. SOCARE was inaugurated on the 17th of July 999, with 2 kids of the convicts, undergoing life term in the Bangalore Central Jail. Backed by well meaning middle class friends and relatives, a trust was immediately registered with 9 trustees and started functioning in the ground floor house of the founder secretary Mr. Venkata Raghavachari Mani.
Today, the organization takes pride in giving comprehensive care to 75 very speciSOCARE Building in Rajajinagaral children – all of them convict’s children or with single parent, from the jails of Karnataka. These children are  presently accommodated in two different facilities, one in Laggere with 55 boys and another at the founder secretary’s ground floor residence at 2nd stage Rajajinagar with 20 girls, all in the  age group of 4 to 14. The organization believes that every child has the right to good education  & believes that the children will become responsible citizens of the society. SOCARE takes a comprehensive care of the children and provides them with boarding, lodging, health, education, trainings etc. All the children have been admitted to good schools in the locality and are receivin  good education. Resources and Financial Support: Currently the SOCARE caravan is moving with  the individual contributions of family and friends. It is supported by the “Akshaya Pathra” scheme of ISKCON. There were a few one time contributions from some IT majors. Some schools are extending partial/full financial support for a few children.

Education:
The children attend regular private schools with state board syllabus both in English and Kannada mediums. The performance of children is fairly good. A feat in the coming year will be the completion of 10th standard by the 1st batch of 4 boys of the organization. Tuition teachers coach the children and help them complete their school home work from LKG to 5th standard. College student volunteers/part time teachers take care of the children from 6th standard  onwards.
Preparations are ahead for placing the 10th standard boys in several job oriented courses. “Access to education” forms the core focus of SOCARE.

Health:
SOCARE has tied up with a few local hospitals for routine health check ups or casualties  etc. Every Sunday a doctor visits the home for regular checkup and minor health care. The children are covered under the blanket health insurance policy.

Entertainment and other activities:
During holidays, children are taken to sponsored picnics, museums, parks, planetarium and jail visits to interact with their father/mother. Other than school lessons, children are trained in karate, dance, exercise, recitation of shlokas/prayers. Children take part in painting/cultural programs/drama competitions etc.

Other allied activities of SOCARE include, arranging of parole for about 7 convicts at any given time, providing a day’s food/accommodation to the convicts’ enroute to their villages during short  holidays, collection/distribution of clothes to the jail inmates once in 6 months. SOCARE has taken up with the government, rehabilitation package for a gang rape victim whose child is in SOCARE. We have been following up this case since 2 years for proper compensation.
